I like you like trees… you make me lift my eyes
-Robert Lowell
Your words are elevated, on another
plane than mine, intriguing in their
simplicity and harmony, beautiful like
the shifting patterns of leaves in the
canopies that draw my eyes up in peace.
I can almost believe I know your soul
simply by swallowing every word
you so carefully chose, but maybe
that only shows my naivety in matters of
humanity and the weariness of our hearts.
Speculation is the only sport I know,
long-jumping from one conclusion
to another, vaulting over reason
to land in the sinking sands of emotion,
I run on self-deprecation and false hopes.
If I am a black hole, you are a nebula,
you explode outward where I collapse
inward, you stretch to infinity, a worm hole
I can travel through to connect with more
beauty and intelligence than I could find alone.
You are a star in my perpetually darkened sky;
do you ever feel weightless with how high
I envision you in flight?
