Will I always be this keening thing? (original poem)

Will I always be this keening thing?
The girl who clings while crying
through a goodbye, begging to
be held just one last time
The girl who sleeps curled
around a memory for years,
too scared to seek another’s warmth
for the fear of it being withdrawn again
The ice in my veins freezing me in place
until someone thaws me with their touch
Sobbing out it doesn’t have to be gentle
but I wish it wouldn’t hurt so much

The girl with a scream and a sob caught
in her throat and a mouth clamped shut,
barring the pathetic words from getting out
She knows they will be met only with piteous
stares and yet another decisive goodbye,
so many endings before even truly beginning
The soundtrack of my life coda after coda
with no melodies or harmonies in sight
